Malawi to take Tanzania dispute to court

Malawi President Joyce Banda says her country is giving up on mediation efforts in the long running border dispute.

President Joyce Banda has said that Malawi was giving up on mediation efforts and would take to the courts to settle a long dormant border dispute with Tanzania which has been re-activated by prospects of an oil find. "Our view is that we should eventually go to court. We should not waste time on this (mediation)," Banda told reporters in Lilongwe on Monday after returning from visits to the US and Britain. She said the mediation bid left to Mozambique's ex-president Joachim Chissano in his capacity as head of a forum of retired leaders from the regional bloc SADC, was "compromised because information submitted by Malawi was leaked to Tanzania". She accused the executive secretary of the forum, John Tesha, a Tanzanian national, for leaking some vital information to his home country. "After surrendering our documents, we were told that they were leaked to Tanzania before the Tanzanians surrendered theirs," Banda said. "We feel everything is compromised," she said. In December Banda said the dispute had dragged for too long and she was considering taking it to the International Court of Justice for arbitration. At stake is a largely undeveloped swathe of the lake where Malawi has awarded a licence to British firm Surestream to explore for oil in the north-eastern waters near Tanzania. Malawi claims ownership of the entire lake under an 1890 agreement, while Tanzania disputes this validity, insisting part of the lake falls within its borders. Talks in the past ended in a deadlock.

A trustworthy source from Mr. Jonathan’s administration disclosed the policy reversal in a telephone conversation.

It would be recalled that President's earlier approval of the plan to introduce the N5,000, suggested by Governor Lamido Sanusi of the Central Bank of Nigeria, had triggered criticism, condemnation and even some street protests. However, the policy was merely being suspended, not abandoned.

In a recent development, the decision has been made to commemorate the Super Eagle’s victory at AFCON 2013 on the national level. According to an anonymous source from the Currency & Branch Operations Department of the CBN, designers are working on the new “appearance” of the N5,000 – Jonathan’s portrait and that of Victor Moses will be placed on the banknote as a reminder of this historical event.

According to a source aide, in a meeting hastily requested by President, he has finally succeeded convincing both Senate President and House Speaker to persuade members to introduce the new note.

According to an anonymous source in President’s administration, the banknotes may be made available “within a couple of months”.

Tyler Perry's Temptation Gross $22.3 Million Over The Weekend, Making It Tyler's Second-Biggest Non-Madea Movie!! --  G.I. Joe: Retaliation saved face at the weekend box office, grossing an estimated $41.2 million from Friday-Sunday, and $51.7 million since opening Thursday. 

Tyler Perry's latest, Temptation, got off to big start, as did Ryan Gosling's and Bradley Cooper's indie drama The Place Beyond the Pines, which debuted in limited release. The Host, the first post-Twilight tale from the library of Stephenie Meyer, disappointed with an $11 million start.

For Retaliation, which featured Channing Tatum, who headlined the toy-based franchise's first film, but stars Dwayne Johnson, the debut avoids the John Carter and Battleship belly flops its studio seemed to be fearing when it yanked the big-budget sequel from the Summer 2012 movie calendar, ostensibly to retool it in 3-D.

With an additional $80.3 million coming in from overseas this weekend, Retaliation posted the year's biggest worldwide debut, per Hollywood.com: $132 million.

Domestically, Retaliation remains a step down from its 2009 predessor, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which took in $54.7 million in three days, and without 3-D-boosted ticket prices.

Temptation, meanwhile, was a step up for Perry, who needed a boost after the thriller Alex Cross and his own Good Deeds. With a bigger-than-projected $22.3 million debut,

Temptation is Perry's second-biggest opening non-Madea movie after the sequel Why Did I Get Married Too? Gosling and Cooper scored big in New York and Los Angeles, where their Place Beyond the Pines averaged a whopping $67,546 at four theaters.

Elsewhere, last weekend's No. 1 film The Croods held great even as it slipped to No. 2. Meanwhile, Oz the Great and Powerful neared $200 million domestically, and The Host got buried, debuting in sixth place, failing to meet modest expectations and earning a soft B-minus CinemaScore from opening-weekend audiences.
